Life is still Good here in Scioto. This last week has been crazy, in a good way
We spent soooooooo much time preparing for Barbara's baptism. It happened people, and it was incredible. After many lovingly concerned calls and texts from Sister Corbett, much coordination with awesome leaders in our ward, and some amazing people in the ward we were able to help Barbara have an incredibly uplifting service on Saturday afternoon. We had a few kick butt talks, a beautiful musical number, but the highlight was definitely Barbara's testimony at the end. She felt the spirit so strongly, and told us how much she appreciated the love that came from both the ward members and from God. She is spectacular and I'm humbled to have been able to help her learn about the gospel and grow closer to God.
Other highlights of the week included musings from Sister Morgan. I've grown to appreciate her thoughts on life a lot. She's a bit quiet but if you listen really hard, she'll come out with some hilarious observations. My favorite this week came yesterday evening. We parked, and she noticed two young men playing football in the street in front of us. While I was getting organized and ready to talk to people, she looked over at me she said "Hey we have a yard, let's go play catch in the road!" I was confused for a minute but I laughed when I realized she was referring to the gentlemen in front of us. I've spent a lot of the last few weeks with my head up, eyes forward, charging onward, trying to get stuff done, and Sister Morgan is always good for a small laugh that will remind me of the fun I need to be having as well.
I've been working hard to help Sister Morgan get to know the area which has allowed me to learn even more about it myself. I still haven't crashed the mission car and even though Ohio hasn't caught on to the whole grid system yet, I'm getting to know the roads a lot better. We've also spent a lot of time with ward members this week. There are a lot of really cool people here in Scioto. Get to know the missionaries in your ward! We are put in the ward to serve you, and the better we know you the more we will be able to do for you! We love working with, and helping the members improve their own testimonies, and maybe even helping you share the gospel with other people. We are just normal people I promise. I remember a few weeks ago we were at a members house for FHE and she mentioned she was going to a 21 Pilots concert, I told her I loved that band and she looked back at me shocked. "Finally," she said, "A missionary who likes bands!" We love the gospel a lot, but we love people even more so get to know us!
Spiritual highlights come from the lyrics of the hymn "Testimony". (Barbara chose it for her closing hymn on Saturday )
1. The witness of the Holy Ghost,
As borne by those who know,
Has lifted me again to thee,
O Father of my soul.
2. I know that thou art in the heav'n.
I know the Savior reigns.
I know a prophet speaks to us
For our eternal gain.
3. My eyes are wet; my heart is full.
The Spirit speaks today.
O Lord, wilt thou my life renew
And in my bosom stay.
4. As testimony fills my heart
It dulls the pain of days.
For one brief moment, heaven's view
Appears before my gaze
I love this hymn so much! Barbara struggled to understand what a testimony was recently so I've been thinking a lot about how to explain it simply. I think the lyrics of this hymn do it perfectly. Testimonies are thief feelings we have in our hearts that we get from God that let us know the truth of all things. It's simply what you know and comes from the heart. Our testimonies are not stagnant, they grow as we study and live the gospel, and they grow as we share them with others. Take some time to think about your testimonies this week. How can you strengthen them? who needs to hear them?
Keep your heads up this week, find the joy in your lives, and remember there's a crazy Sister Missionary out in Ohio who loves you and is praying for you!
